The Uses and Risks of Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines are a type of minor tranquilizer widely prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and seizure disorders. They work by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter GABA, which induces a calming effect on the brain. Common benzodiazepines include diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and alprazolam (Xanax). While effective, these medications carry a risk of dependence and withdrawal symptoms. Long-term use can lead to tolerance, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effect, and discontinuation should be done gradually under medical supervision. Side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination, which can affect daily activities.
