Understanding Tranquilizers
Tranquilizers are a class of drugs used to reduce tension, anxiety, and agitation. They are broadly categorized into two types: major tranquilizers (antipsychotics) and minor tranquilizers (anxiolytics). Major tranquilizers, such as haloperidol and chlorpromazine, are primarily used to treat severe psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Minor tranquilizers, including benzodiazepines like diazepam and lorazepam, are used for short-term relief of anxiety and insomnia. While effective, tranquilizers must be used with caution due to the risk of dependence, tolerance, and potential side effects, such as drowsiness and impaired coordination.
